The do's and dont's of skateboarding
62Do: Buy from your local skate shop
Supporting local skate shops is extremely important and will keep skateboarding alive in your city. If you don't have a local skate shop try finding one in a nearby city. If there is not one within driving distance your best bet is to order one offline, DON'T order from large corporations such as CCS, these comanies mass produce skateboards and jack up the prices to well above average, as well as sucking the life out of local skateshops. If you want a quality product and friendly service to go along with it and don't want to worry about shipping and handling or waiting for your product, look no further than your local skate shops. Remember, buying from large distributors decreases the amount of local skate shops that may pop up around your area, so if you want the best deal BUY LOCALLY!

Google maps is a great way to find the local skate shop that is right for you.
Do: Figure out your stance
Before you begin bombing hills or popping waist high tre' flips, you will need to determine what stance you are. There are two stances, goofy and regular. If you feel more comfortable with your right foot in front and your left foot pushing, you are goofy footed, If it feels more natural to have your left foot in front and your right leg pushing that means you are regular footed. Beginners often have a hard time deciding because both ways seem awkward at first, but over time if you practice pushing and stopping you will begin to favor pushing off with your right foot (regular) or your left foot (goofy). You may have heard of the term "switch" stance, that is simply when a skater who is goofy switches to regular or vica-versa. I would recommend choosing one and sticking with it and only start riding switch when you feel comfortable doing so.
